In version 2 our original DISC1 has been completely rewritten and now includes video tutorials as well as instructions and data files to help you get the best from your digital imaging equipment.

DISC1 was conceived as an all-in-one answer to setting up a typical desk-top digital imaging system - monitor, scanner, printer and software. Other products on the market typically address specific areas such as adjusting printer colour casts, but unless the system as a whole is properly set up results are still likely to be disappointing.

DISC1 is a set of tools and instructions to enable you to calibrate your monitor and printer and set up your software. You can then fine tune the monitor and printer to match one another as it is pointless matching prints to an arbitrary reference.

DISC1 is a fully explained, step by step method, to get all the parts of your complete system talking properly to each other. It provides you with the tools for full system colour matching, setting up your photo software and tonal calibration settings for your monitor and printer.

DISC1 is best used in combination with Adobe Photoshop 6 or later, Adobe Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro, since these have the most comprehensive colour management, curves and tonal adjustment controls. The CD will work on both Mac and PC systems, using just picture files, videos and Adobe Acrobat files. It does not need to be “installed” on your system, nor does it make any modifications to it. Version 2.0 has calibration files for both Adobe (1998) RGB and sRGB systems like Paint Shop Pro.

In addition to basic colour calibration, DISC1 offers:

  • printer gamma adjustments using a grey reference tile, for predictable prints.
  • test images to evaluate screen set-up, printer set-up and tonal calibration.
  • comprehensive, illustrated instructions, in both Acrobat (for easy printing) and HTML (browser) formats.
  • 5 Videos demonstrating set-up techniques and instructions.
  • a new section on importing digital camera files.
  • guidance on colour management set-up for photo imaging software.
  • technical support and updates for registered users.

Contents of the DISC 1 package

  • Full instructions in pdf format, together with Adobe® Acrobat Reader which allows you to read and print the information.
  • A black and white photographic print for use as a reference.
  • Video demonstrations.
  • Carefully selected images for accurate system setting which allow you to:
    • Set your monitor brightness, contrast, gamma and colour corrections
    • Adjust the colour balance of printouts to match the image on the monitor
    • Set the end points of your scanner to ensure full detail is retained in highlight and shadow areas.
  • Colour management setup
  • Resolution and sharpening tips

Registered users are entitled to discounts on future updates, and access to full technical support via e-mail.

NOTE: Disc 1 is designed for use with colour printers - it is not intended for use with quad- and hex-black inkjet systems for monochrome work (such as PermaJet VTBlax and Lyson) although many of the tools provided can help with such systems.

Product Reviews

Geoffrey Crawley, British Journal of Photography:

“its actual system fulfills the aim excellently.”

“the text is a rich source of hints from the author’s experience”

“offers the tools for a practical and photographically aligned method of calibrating the digital image input to the output chain.”

David Kilpatrick, Master Digital Photographer:

“There is no doubt that this PC and Mac compatible, Adobe Acrobat based CD with its large, high quality test files and clearly written procedures and explanations is worth the outlay” - September 2001

Matt Adams, Digital Photographer and Creative Imaging:

“Overall I found the Calibration pack informative and fairly easy to use,...The acid test though is that now my Software, Monitor and Printer have all been adjusted and look like they have spoken to each other. The results obtained since using this product have certainly improved and I feel like I’m in control of what is going on.”
